Project Proposal and Solution
The topic that I chose to focus on for the ENC 1102 semester is Political Science because I am majoring in Political Science- Pre Law. I have always been interested in the inner workings of our government as well the government's of other countries. The research I have done into the Political Science field has been eye- opening.
No government is one hundred percent morally sound. Even Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand do not have perfect governments. There is no such thing; not even in Orlando, Florida. In a ranking of most corrupt to least corrupt, out of the fifty states, Florida is ranked 18. Although there is research into corruption in the state of Florida, there is very little research done into corruption in the Orlando city government. Orlando is one of the biggest tourism capitals in the world as well as home to what will soon be the largest attended university in the country. Any corruption happening in Orlando would impact a very large number of people, not just Orlando citizens. It is very import that any possible instances of corruption be researched and sought out.
One way of accomplishing this may be to obtain funding in order to have a group of highly qualified non-partisan analysts analyzing data of candidates running for city office positions. If these analysts are able to take a closer look into not only the candidate’s foundation beliefs and running promises but also who they get their funding from and if that is in line with what they stand for, we may be able to get a better hold on corruption. Another way to seek out political corruption in our local government could be through the use of newspapers. Every newspaper wants a good story. But the question is, which paper will be unbiased enough to report the truth instead of falling pray to the pressures of reporting only what they know what will keep them safe.
An example of this is the Central Florida Future, the University of Central Florida's newspaper. A very short time ago, the paper printed an article that did not reflect well on UCF's President. When he got wind of this article, he demanded that the paper retract the article immediately. The Central Florida Future stayed strong and printed the article. They were later kicked off campus and their funding was taken away.
This is the type of journalism that needs to be displayed by newspaper's today when regarding the truth in politics. This is the way to get a better hold on corruption and scandal in politics. If we begin to shed more light on the embezzling, the sex scandals, the nepotism, and other indiscretions, it will become harder and harder for them to get away with corruption.
